According to the CDC, about 75 million adults are affected by high blood pressure. 1 out of every 3 adults. Another one third of adults have prehypertension. Nearly two thirds of adults in America are either suffering from or on the verge of hypertension.
High blood pressure has health and financial burdens. Those suffering from high blood pressure have dangerous health risks including heart attacks, stoke, heart failure and kidney disease. High blood pressure also affects the economy as well, costing $46 billion each year in health care cost’s, medication and working days missed.
Even though medication can help with lower blood pressure immediately, a long term solution is needed. Over 50,000 people die each year as a result of high blood pressure and even with an increase in prescription drug use to combat hypertension, there was still an increase in deaths of 56% between 1994 and 2004. Decreasing stress factors, improving sleep, exercise and nutrition are great to implement a healthier lifestyle. But, did you know that upper cervical chiropractic care has been proven to lower blood pressure naturally and safely?
How does this work?
The brain stem is located at the top of the neck and has many functions including regulation of blood pressure. Pharmacology & Therapeutics, 2013.
According to Dr. Thad Vuagniaux, “the brain and the brain stem play a vital role in the regulation of blood pressure. In order to have normal blood pressure, you must have proper communication between the brain and the body. When a misalignment occurs at the top of the neck near the level of the brainstem, brain to body communication is affected which may result in high blood pressure.”
Dr. George Barkers, MD stated in his interview with Web MD that upper cervical chiropractic care “has the affect of not one, but 2 blood pressure medications given in combination. And it seems to be adverse event free. We saw no side effects and no problems. We were shocked to find out that we got more than double what we expected in blood pressure reduction. It is pretty clear that some kind of head or neck trauma early in life is related to this.” Upper cervical problems can stem from auto accidents, sports injuries, slips, falls, poor posture, concussions and even the birthing process.

According to a 2014 U.S. Stress Statistic, 77% of people were regularly experiencing physical symptoms caused by stress. 73% of people regularly experience psychological symptoms caused by stress. 48% of people say their stress has increased in the past five years. 33% of people feel they are living with extreme stress. 3 out of 4 doctor visits are for stress related ailments. Over $300 billion is spent every year in medical costs and loss of work productivity.
Did you know that stress increases all factors that cause sickness and disease? There are two major dominate states that the body is in. It is either in one or the other. The first is a Parasympathetic state. This means that you are in the rest and digest state. Your body is nice and relaxed, you eat and digest food properly, you also sleep well and recover during this state. Then their is the Sympathetic state. This is the fight or flight state. It is good if you need to be active, play sports, lift weights, hunt for food, fight off predators. It is not good for everyday living though. This state is not good for long periods of time. Why? Because it increases cortisol which lowers your immune system and bone density, interferes with learning and memory, increases blood pressure, weight gain, cholesterol and heart disease.
If left unchecked stress will literally eat you alive from the inside out. Causing numerous health complications over an extended given of time.
There are many ways to deal with stress naturally free from toxic outlets such as drugs and alcohol. Playing sports, hanging out with friends, working out, hobbies, yoga and meditation are all great outlets.
However there is a different type of stress that may be occurring in your body, which none of the above list will help with. This stress is caused mostly by physical trauma to the spine and if left unchecked can increase cortisol levels all the same. This stress on your nerve system is called a subluxation and occurs when the bones in the spine are out of alignment. If your body is left Subluxated for long periods of time, your body is stressed and needs to work harder to compensate for the damaged areas in your body.
Chiropractors are the only trained specialists to be able to detect and correct Subluxations. Whether you “feel” healthy or not, it is always a good idea to visit a local Subluxation-based Chiropractor to get your spine checked. Signs and symptoms can go unnoticed for months and even years. This is because 90% of the nerves in your body do not signal pain or discomfort. Only 10% of nerves actually communicate pain. That means you could have damaged nerves and not “feel anything.”
Drs. Brenden and Charlene at HIO Chiropractic located in San Mateo, CA are both certified and licensed Upper Cervical Chiropractors who specialize in detecting and correcting Subluxations. Long answer…your posture is an outer reflection of your inner health. Did you know that chronic poor posture has become a major problem in today’s society? Whether you are sitting all day watching tv, at work, slouching on the couch or chair, texting, driving for multiple hours or being on the computer all day. We were not designed for this sort of lifestyle. Our bodies were designed for movement and activity.
Poor posture doesn’t just look bad from the outside perspective, but it also affects your inner health. Poor posture affects the natural curvatures in your spine. The natural curvatures in your spine are created as cushions for the effects of gravity on your body. When you take away those natural curvatures you increase the stress on the joints in the spine and the nervous system. This can lead to increase in firing of pain receptors, decrease in range of motion, decrease in muscle strength, increase in respiratory problems and muscle tension along the neck and spine.
Posture is important for all ages including children. Children are highly susceptible to poor posture when they are carrying heavy backpacks. A good rule of thumb for a weight limit for any age is the back pack should not weigh more than 10% of the child’s body weight. It should be snug against all areas of the body.
Did you know that there is a direct correlation between the forward position of your head and decrease in health within a person? Studies show that for every inch your head moves forward it increase the stress and weight of it by 10 lbs. When your head is starting to fall forward that is called anterior head syndrome. If you are experiencing this then it is time to get it checked by a professional.
How do you fix anterior head syndrome? Well if you catch it early enough it is possible to reverse some of the damage to your spine and nervous system. With certain cervical neck exercises, stretching, practice of proper posture and ergonomics you can help reverse it. However, regardless of whether it is something that just started or happened years ago, it is highly recommended you get checked by someone who is a professional is posture realignment.
Clinical studies have shown time and time again that upper cervical chiropractic care is proven to help restore curvature within the spine. Every case is obviously different and not it may not always be the case, but it is common to see improvement with posture after care. Remember, with better posture comes better health and healing.
Drs. Brenden and Charlene at HIO Chiropractic located in San Mateo, CA have served numerous people with similar issues dealing with posture problems. If you or someone you know is suffering from anterior head syndrome, it is time to act. Help us stop bay area anterior head syndrome from spreading!
